Natural Perfume Moving Into Its Second Decade – the NP Yahoo Group’s Eleventh Anniversary

A historian could have an easy task of researching the history of natural perfumery as it underwent an international revival, starting in the early 21st century.  They’d only have to visit the Yahoo Natural Perfumery and plow through the 47,000 messages (to date), extensive Files, Links and other parts of the website.

Here is a message I sent to the group today, and I’d love to share it with you.  If you’d like to join the group, the homepage is here.

Hi Everyone:

On June 14, 2002, I started this group, the third Internet perfumery group I initiated, and the first one dedicated to 100% natural perfumery.

We’re almost 2500 strong now, and we are the biggest, longest-lasting group of this type on the Internet – and it wouldn’t be possible without all of you!

Our archives, Files, Links, Photos and other site resources are incredibly rich with information and networking, two crucial elements that are the heart of any enterprise.

As natural perfumery moves forward in the second decade of its modern revival, we can trace the development of it here, in writing, in the accumulation of knowledge, of correction of false assumptions re: materials and methods and much more.

Thank you all so much for contributing, and for those who are quiet and don’t post, for being part of the network of those striving for knowledge and applying it to your particular part of the world of natural perfumery.

Take care and don’t forget to stop and smell the roses…and the jasmine..and the conifers, etc.

    what a legacy you are leaving in your perfumed wake!

    in the gathering of community, there is always the joy of finding others self same, and the pangs of evolution. it is my observation that this community is serious in it’s endeavors, sacred in it’s approach to purity, and joyful in it’s acceptance of the myrid ways of approching our art.

    i have met some amazing people through your efforts in bringing us together, and for that i thank you!

    there is so much information available, old schoolers such as myself would not have had to linger in labs supping on any off-hand knowledge that might stumble upon the floor! This forum has more information available to the casual reader than i may have learned in YEARS of study. that’s saying something miss thing. 😉

    i’m so grateful to be part of this vibrant community, honored to have had such communication with you, and celebrate each of us on our personal perfumed paths!

    here’s to another decade of etheral art, community complete with it’s angels and… others, and the future of natural perfumery and it’s earth renewing power <3

Ask the Perfumer - and an Ambergris hypothesis Guild member Lisa Coburn posted a link on Facebook that took me to a video on how cephalopods--squid, cuttlefish and octopus, are masters of disguise.  As I watched it, I made a perfume connection, straight to the elusive, mysterious, rare and valued ambergris, a gorgeous material used in perfumery. Photo of the famed 'Yeti' chunk of ambergris. Ambergris is produced by the stomach/intestinal secretions of the sperm whale to protect its insides from the sharp beaks of the squid and cuttlefish, two main items in its diet.  The whale evacuates the chunk of ambergris when it becomes large enough to be an irritant on its own, albeit a softer, rounder irritant compared to the beak and cartilage of the squid or cuttlefish.  As a perfumer, I often have to gently remind excitable newbies ;-)  that the scent of the ambergris is secondary to its major contribution to a perfume, which is its ability to 'marry' and allo

Contest: Fresh ginger, fresh ginger, wherefort art thou fresh ginger?

Can you help me?  I need two things from my readers. There will be a freebie gift for two helpful souls who reply, one for each subject. First:  Back in late 2006, I stumbled across *fresh* ginger root essential oil at liberty natural.  There were two - one from Madagascar, one from Indonesia.  I immediately told my perfumery friends about it, and I used the fresh version in the kits for my students.  Why the excitement? Fresh grated ginger - zest, fresh, hot, spicy fragrance Previously, the only ginger root oil available was from the peeled, sun-dried roots, and it was a middle note for perfumery.  It had a mellow, soft fragrance, much like the dried ginger powder you get for baking purposes.  This fresh ginger, on the other hand, smelled just like the fresh cut or grated root!  Hot, spicy, wet, luscious, and a top note!
