Ask the Perfumer - Sunday, July 31, 2011 - until 10 PM EST

July is over! Here at Ask the Perfumer headquarters we all wonder if there is a place of endless summer, without the severe heatwaves and droughts, where the jasmines bloom all year. Oh, wait, we're living here. It's like summer here 11 months of the year, so we're going to stop and smell the frangipani today. And the Chinese perfume tree, and the Costa Rican mint, etc. Hope your gardens are doing well and that you are harvesting some of the fragrant beauty for scent extraction, potpourri or some other alchemic delight.

  1. Dear Anya:

What is the chinese perfume tree? I am chinese-american and would like to get one. I am signing up for your course in September and I can't wait!

  3. Anya, I love the wisecrack about 11 months of summer in Miami. I'm in West Palm and am thinking of growing vetiver, my favorite scent. Can it be done?

  4. Hi Hua Lee:

It's Aglaia odorata. I got mine locally, and you can check your local nurseries. Tiny ones are available at logees.com

They're so carefree, you'll love it. I never fertilize, water, or have trouble with bugs or diseases. It blooms many times a year here in Miami. The scent fills the garden and half the street!

I look forward to you studying with me, and please email me if you have any questions ahead of enrollment.

  5. Hi Richard:

My friend Douglas is the first to successfully produce the absolute. It's ready-to-use and incredibly scented, very strong. The tincture is made the traditional way, and aged, and then he has a secret distillation method that captures most of the ambergris from the tincture.

  6. Hi Maria:

I suggest growing it in a pot so that the roots are easy to harvest. It does very well here.

  7. Happy Sunday Anya!!

I'm a devoted follower of you, because you showed me such kindness when I had to drop out of your class due to illness and you gave me private tutoring. Forever thankful!

When the Fifi Indie committee was announced I was shocked to not see your name on it. If you remember I wrote you when the last year nominations went out because I had not heard about it. What is going on with the Fifis? You are NUMBER ONE with all the natural indies with the yahoo group and the guild. Other than Mandy Aftel, there isn't one indie perfumer on that committee. What is going on?

Hugs from Rachael, your chicken soup slave, he he

  9. Hi Rachael and Richard:

I can't say anything because I wasn't part of the process. We'll see how it all plays out in the long run.

    Night all...
