Ask the Perfumer - Sunday, September 4, 2011 - until 10 PM EST

I hope everyone is enjoying the long Labor Day holiday weekend in the USA.  I'm relaxing and working in my garden, which isn't really work at all, especially when I'm harvesting a variety of fragrant flowers.  Enfleurage and tincturing are my methods to capture the scent, and nothing could be easier. I'll be checking in to see your questions throughout the day, so drop me a line and let me know what's going on in your fragrant garden, or whatever is on your mind.

  1. Anya,
There is alot of Datura growing here in the desert. After reading the wonderful blog about moonflowers and datura, I stopped to smell one of the flowers but found it had no scent. Do you know if the plant is fragrant at all? If so, what part and when? Like if it's the flower, is it fragrant at night rather than the day time or perhaps the fragrance is in the seed ball or roots?

  2. Hi there Anya

How are your enfleurages coming along? Do you like the product better than distilling or tincturing?

  3. I'm considering taking your online course starting in October. Do I need to buy your kits for the course?

  4. Dear Roberta:

The enfleurages are very encouraging. Vietnamese gardenia, Tahitian gardenia, jasmines, etc. There is a different reason for each method. I also tincture the prolific Viet. Gardenias, for example, and I will use that alcohol to extract the scent from the enfleurage fat. The tincturing is by far the easiest. I have incredibly rich and concentrates tinctures of Michelia alba flowers, for instance. You have to play around and figure which method is best.

  5. Hi Elle:

You don't have to buy either kit if you have comparable aromatics. Please review the list for both and let me know. Kit #2 is currently out of stock, and it will be about another month before I have it in again. http://perfumeclasses.com/kits.htm
