Last Saturday the 9th I got an email from Heather of Memory and Desire blog. It was in response to a post I had made on the blog about ambergris. She asked if I had received an email inviting me to take part in a Memory and Desire perfume project. I had not. I sometimes receive 100+ emails a day and some do get lost in the shuffle, and I also had had server problems moving my websites and servers. The deadline was Saturday. Well, Type-A personalities never know when to say "no", so I said yes. Then a bit of panic set in. "Brutal deadline" was the way Heather described it, and yes, it was.
You can read the in-depth description of the brief we perfumers were given in today's post on Memory and Desire. I had no time to work on it that day, since I was in the middle of a big project, and just put it in the back of my mind. Well, you know what happens when you do that. Up it pops at 2:18 a.m. and luckily, in my case, it made me laugh, it all seemed right, and it fit my concept of blending old and new. I couldn't get to sleep for a few hours, you know how it is when the creative rush hits the conscious mind. I finally did get back to sleep, but as soon as I awoke at 7 a.m. I got to work.
My submittal was finished and emailed to Heather. I believe I heard her scream when she received it. Yay! Dream Accomplished. Thank you, Ezra Pound, for the inspiration and the trip down memory lane, by way of the subway.
First perfumer to be published, tomorrow, March 17: Mandy Aftel. Lisa Fong joins Mandy and I in representing the Natural Perfumers Guild. So nice to see three natural perfumers in the mix of what is truly a cross-section of the perfumery world.
This project will be amazing to see unfold, and I am really looking forward to seeing the submittals which will give us all a rare glimpse inside the creative process of a perfumer.

Anya, your contribution to the project is truly unique, just as I suspected it would be. And I can't wait to post it on Monday, the 24th. It's turned into a life-changing project for me. It was really extraordinary to be involved in conversations with perfumers from around the world who approach their work in all different ways, yet who were still willing to take a few moments and contribute to something just because. I've always known the perfumery community to be full of the most generous souls I've ever come in contact with, but this experience just blew me away. Thank you so very much for agreeing to the brutal deadline (and your post was early!) and also for your faith in the project as a whole. I am in your debt.
